ランサム憧憬の地

帰郷

子ども時代に休暇を過ごしたコニストンへ、成人してからも機会あるごとに足を運んでいたランサムですが、妻 Ivy を英国に残しロシアへ去った後も、休暇あるいは仕事で帰国したときにはしばしばコニストン（ともちろんレインヘッド）を訪問しています。自伝と書簡集に見つかるものの一部をあげると、

• 1915年9月25日　ニューキャッスルに船で着き，それから一ヶ月英国に滞在する間に，コリンウッド家の人々と会う，Wiltshire（Ivy の住まいがあった）と Coniston で釣りをした．（自伝 p.185）
• 1916年11月以降12月11日より前　Leeds へ行き，もう一度レインヘッドで数日コリンウッド家と過ごした．湖でボートを漕ぎ，Severn家とのお茶にブラントウッドへ行った．（自伝 p.205）
• 1919年6月　コニストンへ行き，コリンウッドに会った．（自伝 p.270）この時，シリアへ旅立とうとしているアルトゥニアン家と再会しているはずです．
• 1922年3月　一時帰国しマンチェスターでの要件の合間に，コニストン，レインヘッドを訪問（自伝 p.305）
• 1923年3月　コニストンへコリンウッドを訪ねた．（自伝 p.307）
• 1924年2月　マンチェスターでの仕事の合間にコニストンへ行き，ウィンダミアからロンドンへ戻る．（書簡集 p.127） 

コニストンとコリンウッド家がランサムにとってどれほど特別なものであったかが偲ばれます。遠くロシアの地にあって飛び回る仕事をしながらも、ランサムは「夜空に北極星を捜し、あの最愛の山々の稜線を見ていた（Ransome, Arthur, (1958) Swallows and Amazons. Auther's Note Cape.）」のでしょうね。

憧憬

そのことは、ランサムが母やコリンウッド家に宛てた何通もの手紙に読みとることができます。ロシアへ旅立ってまもなくは、望郷の思いがひときわ強かったでしょうし、前線での経験はコニストンへの憧憬を一層かき立てたかも知れません。戦争、革命、政治闘争などとまったく無縁な「休暇の物語」は、この頃すでにその種が蒔かれたのでしょうか？

• 1914年8月12日付，Collingwood夫人へ，St. Petersburgより　
  O Lanehead. It's the only place I can trust to preserve its character through this upheaval. （書簡集p.15）
• 1915年1月12日付，Dora Collingwoodへ，Moscowより
  Very many thanks for your letter which was the first to reach me since I left England. It's very pleasant to think of Lanehead away here. （書簡集p.18）
• 1915年２月27日付，Dora Collingwoodへ，Petrogradより
  I wish I were at Lanehead for a hour or two, and with the Skald a free men and very kind, so that I could fairly flood him with questions. （書簡集p.23）
• 1916年9月7日付，母へ，Glinka Street（ブカレスト）より
  I expect in Bucharest it will be hotter still.  But it's sickening to think that but for this sudden affair I should now be on my way not to Bucharest but to Leeds and Finsthwaite and Coniston. （書簡集p.35）
• 1917年2月26日付，母へ，Glinka Street（ブカレスト）より
  And I do so want to be at home, and to go to Coniston, and to walk over Wrynose with Barbara and to feel that there are other things in life besides exceedingly complex politics. （書簡集p.42）
• 1917年5月1日付，母へ，Glinka Street（ブカレスト）より
  Your two pictures of Coniston hang on the wall beside a bit of heather from Peel Island and an ikon of Saint Nicholas. They give me great pleasure every day. （書簡集p.44，ピール島のヒースを持ってきたとは！）

こうした手紙の中で、もっとも注目されるのは次のものではないでしょうか。

1917年6月6日付，母へ，Glinka Street（ブカレスト）より

I never thought when I came to Russia in the beginning, and spent my first summer here hunting fairy tales that it would end in this sort of business, of which I forsee at least another year, and indeed begin to fear that long after the war is done the revolution and its developments will keep me couscience-bound to the treadmill.Never mind, some time or other a fine morning will find Joyce and me producing our masterpieces, either on my boat, or in a cottage in the lakes. （書簡集p.47）
最初にロシアへやって来た夏，おとぎ話の採話をしていた時には，こんな事になろうとは考えてもいなかった．短くてももう一年いることになろうし，戦争が終結した後も革命とその後の情勢の成りゆきで，この終わりのない仕事を続けざるをえないのではないかと思うこの頃です．くよくよすまい．いつの日か，ある晴れた朝，ジョイス（妹）と私は傑作を執筆しているだろう．自分の船の上で，あるいは湖水地方の家で．

こうした憧れの土地を持っていたというのは幸せなことでしょうね。ランサムはコニストンに「刷り込まれてしまった」と言っても良いかも知れません。
